Los venezolanos de mi generación tenemos una relación peculiar con los ruidos nocturnos. Aprendimos, sin proponérnoslo, a clasificarlos. El trueno de febrero, que llega desde el lago y hace vibrar los vidrios sin romper nada. El disparo, que es más seco de lo que uno esperaría y siempre suena más cerca de lo que está. La moto que pasa a las tres de la mañana y que, dependiendo del año y del barrio, podía ser un delivery o podía ser otra cosa. El zumbido descendente del transformador cuando se va la luz, ese sonido de máquina que se rinde, seguido del silencio absoluto y después de los generadores de los vecinos que sí podían pagar uno.

Yo crecí catalogando esos ruidos en Maracaibo. Es una habilidad inútil que no se pierde. Todavía hoy, en una ciudad canadiense donde la electricidad no se va nunca y donde el ruido más violento de la noche es la máquina quitanieve, me despierto a veces con el oído puesto, buscando clasificar algo.

Lo que ningún venezolano sabía clasificar la madrugada del sábado 3 de enero de 2026 fue esto: siete explosiones sobre Caracas, aviones volando bajo, y después un silencio informativo que duró horas. No había categoría para eso. No estaba en el catálogo.

Las explosiones despertaron a la ciudad a la 1:55 de la madrugada. Durante horas no estuvo claro quién atacaba ni por qué. Nadie salió a explicarlo: ni el Ministerio de Comunicación, ni la Fuerza Armada, ni el Palacio de Miraflores, ni ninguna embajada. En un país acostumbrado a las cadenas nacionales de cuatro horas por motivos triviales, el silencio del Estado fue en sí mismo la primera noticia.

La segunda noticia llegó por una vía que merece detenerse a describir, porque en ella está contenido todo el libro que usted tiene en las manos.

No llegó por Venezolana de Televisión. No la dio un ministro venezolano. No la anunció la Asamblea Nacional. No la comunicó el alto mando militar. La noticia de mayor trascendencia en la historia republicana contemporánea de Venezuela, la captura del jefe de Estado dentro de su propio cuartel general, le fue comunicada al pueblo venezolano por el presidente de otro país, en el idioma de otro país, a través de la plataforma privada de ese presidente.

Venezuelans of my generation have a peculiar relationship with night-time noises. We learned, without meaning to, to classify them. The February thunder that comes off the lake and rattles the windows without breaking anything. The gunshot, drier than you would expect and always closer than it is. The motorbike passing at three in the morning which, depending on the year and the neighbourhood, might be a delivery or might be something else. The descending hum of the transformer when the power goes, that sound of a machine giving up, followed by absolute silence and then by the generators of the neighbours who could afford one.

I grew up cataloguing those noises in Maracaibo. It is a useless skill and it does not go away. Even now, in a Canadian city where the electricity never fails and the most violent sound of the night is the snowplough, I sometimes wake with my ear cocked, trying to classify something.

What no Venezuelan knew how to classify on the morning of Saturday, 3 January 2026 was this: seven explosions over Caracas, aircraft flying low, and then an information blackout that lasted hours. There was no category for it. It was not in the catalogue.

The explosions woke the city at one fifty-five in the morning. For hours it was not clear who was attacking or why. Nobody came out to explain: not the ministry of communications, not the armed forces, not the Miraflores Palace, not any embassy. In a country accustomed to four-hour national broadcasts over trivial matters, the silence of the state was itself the first piece of news.

The second came by a route worth describing, because it contains the whole of the book you are holding.

It did not come from Venezuelan state television. It was not given by a Venezuelan minister. It was not announced by the National Assembly. It was not communicated by the military high command. The most consequential news in Venezuela’s contemporary republican history, the capture of the head of state inside his own headquarters, was communicated to the Venezuelan people by the president of another country, in that country’s language, through that president’s privately owned platform.
